To make the most of the summer season and to enjoy alcohol sensibly, Sandeep Verma, Director of “Drink Aware India” advises that people follow the recommended daily alcohol limits and the tips below:
DON’T”: Tip 1. Never go drink on an empty stomach No, chips, peanuts and other tiny snacks are not FOOD. Alcohol absorption is increased by hunger, you get more dizzy from one beer on an empty stomach.
Tip 2. Don’t mix the drinks and always eat between them Don’t drink strong liquor (whiskey) followed by beer, by champagne, by strong liquor, by beer, etc. You’ll get drunk, faster and uglier. You’ll get sick. So, don’t: never alternate drinks.
Tip 3. When feeling sick, go throw up If you didn’t follow through the previous tips, you may eventually feel really bad. The room is spinning, you feel a bit like wanting to throw up, only not quite so. Go throw up. After rejecting the alcohol in excess, and after freshening up, you’ll feel a lot better.
DO: Tip 1. Oily food - less alcohol absorption An oily esophagus/stomach absorbs less alcohol. This is a tip for the hard-core drunkards, but they probably know it already.
Tip 2. You decide how much you drink, not your friends It’s not a contest. You DON’T need to drink all the beers your friends give you. Not all men/women are born equal. Some hold their liquor better than others. If you start feeling bad, but your friends insist to keep drinking, just STOP. Go drink some juice or water instead.
Tip 3. When dizzy, take a break After three-four half-a-litter pints and not enough snacks in between you are sure to get dizzy and start having problems with equilibrium. It’s time for a break - walk out in fresh air, get some water on your face, stay a while in a quieter place. There’s no harm in it - just tell your buds you went to the loo.
Tip 4. Make it last longer Nobody likes it short. If you finish your beer in a minute you’ll be the one not drinking while the others do, and you’ll feel compelled to get a new one. So, instead, make it last longer. Talk, take a sip, talk some more, eat some chips, talk some more. If you are a heavy drinker, remember that during the summer alcohol consumption can More rapidly dehydrate you raise your blood pressure ,increase your chances of developing hypoglycemia, a condition that causes weakness and interferes with the body's temperature regulation and also increase your chances of becoming a heat prostration or stroke victim. Daily alcohol limits are recommended by Government in order to avoid the health and social risks of excessive and binge drinking in any one session.
It is recommended that men should drink no more than 3 to 4 units of alcohol a day and no more than 21 units over the course of the week, and that women should drink no more than 2 to 3 units of alcohol a day and no more than 14 units over the course of the week. Remember, that for each unit you drink over the daily limit, the risk to your health increases. It's important to spread the units throughout the week – you can't “save up” your units for the weekend or a party, doing this is often referred to as ‘binge drinking’.
Alcohol is usually measured in units. Many bottles of wine, beer and ready-mixed drinks have the units marked on the label. The units given below for wine, lager or spirits apply to ordinary strength drinks:
-
Glass of wine (pub measure) 1.5 units
-
Pint of lager / Stout 2 units
-
Measure of spirit (pub measure) 1.5 units
-
Ready–mixed alcopop 1.5 units
-
Bottle of wine 9 units
Extra strong varieties contain more alcohol and so could contain up to twice as many units. Ready-mixed drinks vary in strength and bottle size – so the advice is to check the label. “We would advise all people who drink to enjoy alcohol sensibly and moderately.”
