The heat is on
Dr Samir Parikh
Psychiatrist Max Hospital

The summers are here and in their full bloom at that. The temperatures have been soaring and there seems to be no respite for the common man. Be it that one is sitting under the cool climate controlled atmosphere of the air conditioner at work, in the car or at home or one is outdoors, eventually the heat does catch up to us at some point or the other.

The way things are going frequently it seems that one would possibly melt away even if one foot is kept outside. As the day passes by and dawn gives way to dusk the temperatures do cool down but not so much and the feeling of discomfort persists as the respite is perhaps only from the direct heat of the sun. All this of course has a significant impact upon our daily routines.

Going out during the day becomes rather restricted as it is too hot and one would prefer to go to places that are air conditioned and preferably not in the open air. Furthermore, evening times tend to be more preferably for going out and having a good time be it with friends or family or whether one just needs to go shopping. It is generally also observed that that as the temperatures soars, so do tempers.

The heat tends to be unforgiving by nature and so do we become the same way. Small things tend to irritate us more often and tolerance levels for sure come down. However, in general this is not related to temperament but to the level of discomfort that one experiences due to the rising temperatures.

Hence it is seen that more people tend to be liable to experience mood swings and the levels of stress tend to be perhaps higher. Inducing the feeling of relaxation and calmness takes more of an effort on the part of the individual and this in itself can be a source of enhanced irritability. The summer has a profound effect on the state of an individual’s mind and it is important to find ways to keep one’s self calm and cool such that tempers do not flare and temperatures stay under control.
